Review: “The Veil” by Chloe Neill The first in a new urban fantasy series depicts a bleak and beautiful world

The VeilAuthor of the popular Chicagoland Vampire novels, Neill delivers another amazing urban fantasy series set in war torn New Orleans, permanently scarred by the ravages of full scale war with the supernatural world that lives beyond the Veil, the barrier that separates it from our world.

Claire Conolly is a pillar of the community in New Orleans, and also a Sensitive: a human biologically keyed to absorb and use magic that seeps through the Veil. Absorbing too much of this magic can turn Sensitives into violent, mindless creatures called wraiths, which is why they are confined, along with any supernatural creature, to a prison district known as the Devil’s Isle.

When Claire picks up the attention of a supernatural bounty hunter named Liam Quinn while using her gifts to help a human in trouble, he promises her training to control her abilities so she won’t become a wraith… a quest that not only leads her straight into Devil’s Isle itself, but pulls her into an investigation of the growing number of attacks by wraiths who seem to be capable of rational thought. As she grows closer to Liam and takes the first steps towards control, a sinister plot begins to unfold, one that could not only destroy what’s left of New Orleans, but raze the world as they know it to the ground.

The book is the first of a new series, and as such is a somewhat difficult read. There are heavy doses of extremely necessary exposition, but it’s worth getting through them to meet a well rounded cast of characters and a world both bleak and beautiful, and not without a beautiful thread of hope woven through it. Lovers of military fiction may enjoy the utilitarian aspects of this novel with its military government and heavy dose of conspiracy, while fans of the postapocalyptic and zombie genres will find something that speaks to them in the presence of wraiths and the quest for containment.

Add to that some faeries, angels, and a hacker from the world beyond the Veil, and you have the foundations laid for a new series that has a little something for every reader. With a climax that will make you glad you got through the brick and mortar necessities of world building in telling this story, THE VEIL will leave readers vibrating with excitement for the next installment to come.
