“Silence Fallen” Adds New Levels and Depths to Favorite Characters

“Silence Fallen” Adds New Levels and Depths to Favorite Characters

Silence Fallen by Patricia BriggsOverall Review: In Silence Fallen, Patricia Briggs takes things in the Tri-Cities to a whole new level. This is a fresh adventure introducing new depth to previously pass-through characters (everyone’s got a boogie man), a greater understanding of the inner workings of the new order of the day in the neutral zone, and as ever an exploration of the ever-deepening love and partnership that is Mercy and Adam’s marriage.

The Details: Silence Fallen comes out the gate with a bang and a crash and a kidnapping. Mercy makes a quick run to the local convenience store for baking ingredients and never makes it back home.

This turn of events brings together Adam and his wolves, Marsila still reigning Mistress of the Tri-Cities seethe, Stefan, and pack witch Elizaveta in an uneasy alliance to hunt her down and secure her safe return. Given that this is Mercy, daughter of Coyote, you already know that will be far easier said than done.

This installment, more than others, is multi-character driven. You’ll gain insight into the motivations of Marsila – although don’t expect hearts, flowers, or tears she’s still Queen Bitch – and a more expansive understanding of how the vampire world works (or doesn’t) and for the first time, Briggs brings European vampires and wolves affirmatively into play. As the rules change and loyalties are tested (further) you’ll see what makes Adam such a formidable Alpha. This time, Mercy may not be able to blame her Coyote for the mess she finds herself in but one long side-eye in his direction is more than warranted.

The pacing of the story takes a bit of time to gather steam as all the characters and players are set in place but the devil is in the details…sometimes literally. Giving everything time to fall into place and If you’re a big picture kind of reader, the parts of this book will feel a little familiar because Briggs deliberately revisits previous themes in order to reorient then in the changed world Mercy and the gang no find themselves living in.

Silence Fallen is a thrill ride with unexpected turns and surprising (but welcome) appearances that manages to cleverly advance the overall series story arc while satisfactorily filling in more than one character’s backstory. With a little European history thrown in for flavor – and one seriously wicked obstacle to getting home – Patricia Briggs expands the worldview of the Tri-Cities gang all the while drawing them closer together.

*For the first time, readers not only get Pack (gamer) shenanigans, danger, and a madcap adventure; you’ll hear from Adam Hauptman directly. Yes, you read that correctly. Book Ten of the Mercy Thompson Series brings you large parts of this story told directly from your favorite local Alpha’s point of view.

That alone makes it worth the read.

In the #1 New York Times bestselling Mercy Thompson novels, the coyote shapeshifter has found her voice in the werewolf pack. But when Mercy’s bond with the pack—and her mate—is broken, she’ll learn what it truly means to be alone…

Attacked and abducted in her home territory, Mercy finds herself in the clutches of the most powerful vampire in the world, taken as a weapon to use against alpha werewolf Adam and the ruler of the Tri-Cities vampires. In coyote form, Mercy escapes—only to find herself without money, without clothing, and alone in the heart of Europe…

Unable to contact Adam and the rest of the pack, Mercy has allies to find and enemies to fight, and she needs to figure out which is which. Ancient powers stir, and Mercy must be her agile best to avoid causing a war between vampires and werewolves, and between werewolves and werewolves. And in the heart of the ancient city of Prague, old ghosts rise…
