Comics writer/author Charlie Huston stops by to chat about his new supernatural crime noir fantasy novel Catchpenny. He talks about how fantasy was his first fiction interest, how that influenced some of the crime story ideas he had later (including television ideas), and how that led to this story.

Charlie talks about using the mirrors as a key element of Sid’s abilities and the use of spells, magic and supernatural elements to build characters who live in the gray areas of society. He also talks about discovering Sid and Circe’s voices, while also working through his own struggles with depression and sobriety, and still wanting to show that even when in the midst of dark or dire circumstances, there can still be ways to find a path towards hope.

Also looking forward to the movie adaptation of his first novel, Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler as Hank Thompson and directed by Darren Aronofsky. Production beginning this fall, perhaps?
